A-Frame Homes Through Time
A-frame designs date back centuries, influencing structures like Japan’s 17th-century gassho-style houses, built for silk farming, and New Zealand’s Māori marae, sacred meeting houses symbolizing identity and belonging. However, it wasn’t until architect Rudolph Schindler introduced an A-frame residence in California in the 1930s that the design gained popularity in the U.S.
The Mid-Century A-Frame Boom
The A-frame’s true rise began in the 1950s when architects John Carden Campbell and Worley K. Wong introduced prefabricated kits for easy assembly. Their 60-degree sloped Leisure House became the ideal vacation home, offering affordability, quick construction, and durability against extreme weather.

Although A-frame homes once faced drawbacks like limited storage, steep walls, and temperature regulation challenges, modern upgrades have resolved these issues:
Less steep roof angles (around 45 degrees) for more usable space.
Triple-paned windows for better insulation.
Dormers and raised floors for additional storage and living areas.
Insulated walls, attic spaces, and energy-efficient sealing to improve temperature control.
